Security: What Alta Labs Is Doing to Keep You Safe Online

September 27, 2024

At Alta Labs, we know how crucial it is to control the content accessed through your wireless network, whether you're managing an enterprise environment or securing your home network. That’s why each of our access points comes equipped with many security features built into the unit. These security features are available to any user who installs Alta Labs Access Points. Although we recommend using Alta Labs Switches and Router, these features are available by simply using our APs. These features include a Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) engine. This powerful tool enables total control of your network - utilizing the many features available through Alta Labs.

Key Features:

Flexible Filtering Options: Easily set filter policies via Alta Control. You can block specific applications or entire application groups from a comprehensive list that supports quick search functionality.

Custom Website Blocking: Enter specific URLs to block sites such as tiktok.com or facebook.com, directly from the interface.

Password-Based Bypass: For users who require unfiltered access, our AltaPass™ multi-password technology allows selective bypassing of filter policies. Administrators can apply these settings to specific passwords and SSIDs, ensuring controlled and tailored network access.

Content Filtering: Allows users to block access to unauthorized or sensitive sites and applications without needing additional network hardware like switches, routers, or firewalls.

Our DPI engine is designed to be both powerful and user-friendly, making it simple to manage content access across diverse user groups.Whether you are an enterprise Network Administrator or a concerned parent, our access points allow you to restrict access to those unauthorized or sensitive sites, applications or application types. This DPI engine is built into the AP itself, so there is no need for additional hardware to utilize this feature.

There are many scenarios where users can’t have or don’t need their content filtered. The Alta Labs management interface allows you to bypass the site filter policy using our patented AltaPass Multi-Password Authentication technology. Define a password to provide to users that bypasses the defined filter rules. If a hotspot has been created, it can also be bypassed. If a schedule has been defined, it can be ignored. Multiple password options can be defined using various combinations of the options.

For instances where specific devices should not have their content filtered, adhere to a schedule, or bypass a hotspot, admins can allow individual devices to bypass the filter, schedule, and/or hotspot settings. You can also utilize our built-in scheduler to determine when content or internet access is available to the users on the network.

Easily create an internet access schedule to define the times when internet access will be turned on or off. Select a large time block covering the entire week or select hourly and daily times individually. Drag time blocks to move them to a different day or time. Extend or reduce time blocks by adjusting them in any direction. A schedule can be created for each wireless network SSID you create. Now that you can control the content on the network and the time in which it is accessible - it’s time to determine which devices adhere to the filters and which don’t.

As mentioned earlier, AltaPass™ is Alta Labs’ unique patented feature that allows clients to connect to the same wireless network SSID using different passwords. The functionality is built into all Alta Labs Access Points and managed using Alta Control™. Configure unlimited passwords and effortlessly scale to thousands of users. Clients are provided with different network and internet access levels based on the password they use to connect to the network. Passwords can be utilized by individuals or groups. When a password is created, select from one of the predefined standard use cases. The password can then also be associated with limited download and/or upload speeds, assigned to a VLAN, or set to bypass the filtering rules, the hotspot functionality, or to ignore the schedule.

• Standard/Small Typical network with less than 100 WiFi clients/devices

• Large Optimized for hundreds to thousands of WiFi clients/devices

• IoT Restricted to Internet and local incoming connections only

• Internet only Restricted to Internet only

• Guest Restricted to Internet and IoT devices

Although AltaPass is a patented proprietary feature from Alta Labs, some people have confused the functionality as being the same as PPSK (Private Pre-Shared Key). Below is a comparison chart of the features included in AltaPass vs PPSK.

Styled Table
