Here at Alta Labs, security was not added as an afterthought. It has been one of the foundational principles guiding the design of our products from day one.
Many attacks against networking infrastructure begin with devices that have been deployed but never fully configured, devices operating with insecure defaults, or systems that have not been properly managed after installation. Our team of world-class and well-seasoned engineers intentionally designed Alta Labs products to help address these risks before they become vulnerabilities.
Every Alta Labs device must be added to a site, set up if you will, before it becomes operational. Alta Labs devices cannot simply be connected and left running in an unmanaged state. This design helps ensure that devices are intentionally deployed and associated with a known administrator from the moment they are activated.
Alta Labs deploys additional safeguards to encourage proper configuration. If a device remains connected to a network without being fully configured, the device provides a persistent visual indication through its status LEDs, alerting installers and administrators that setup remains incomplete. This is a simple concept, but it reflects our broader philosophy: secure deployment should be encouraged by design.
From the management portal for our Cloud controller and local controllers alike, to captive portals running on every Alta Labs Access Point, trusted certificates are automatically deployed to ensure secure communication for every user experience. You will not see a broken lock in the browser when using Alta Labs products, so there is no compromise in accepting a self-signed certificate. This eliminates the common threat of man-in-the-middle attacks that are prevalent in other network vendors’ implementations.
We also continue to provide free firmware updates for the life of the product and strongly encourage customers to keep automatic updates enabled. Our cloud architecture was designed so that customer network traffic is not routed through Alta Labs infrastructure, and our devices do not require continuous cloud connectivity to operate.
No networking vendor can credibly claim that software vulnerabilities will never be discovered. Security is a continuous process. What manufacturers can control is how products are designed, how quickly issues are addressed, and whether secure operation is the default experience for customers.
